ChatGPT dots vs AgentFront: an agent for you, or an agent you sell
OpenAI's new dots are always-on agents with their own computer, your memory and your apps. They are built to work for you, not your audience. Here is how a dot differs from an AgentFront agent, when to use each, and how to use both.

On September 29, 2026, OpenAI introduced dots: always-on agents inside ChatGPT that keep working between conversations. A dot has its own cloud computer, connects to your apps, remembers how you like to work, and checks in when it needs a decision. It is the most capable personal agent most people have been offered so far.
It also arrived the same autumn that Custom GPTs are being retired, so a lot of creators are asking the obvious question: is a dot the new way to build an agent for my audience?
Short answer: no, and it is not trying to be. A dot is an agent that works for you. AgentFront is where you build an agent that works for your customers, on your own address, and charge for it. This guide explains the difference in detail, so you can pick the right one for the job, or use both.
What a dot is
Everything in this section comes from OpenAI's help article Getting started with your dot and the ChatGPT release notes. Dots are new and rolling out gradually, so check those pages for changes.
- An always-on agent in your ChatGPT account. You give it a goal and context, and it keeps making progress between conversations: research, drafts, code, follow-ups.
- Its own cloud computer and browser, plus optional access to your own computer, which starts turned off.
- Your apps. It works through ChatGPT plugins you connect, such as your calendar, email or Slack, and it can review connected information on its own and form memories from it.
- Your memory. It starts with your ChatGPT memory and learns from there.
- Your rules. For actions like sharing, purchasing or accessing data, you choose whether it acts without asking, acts only if pre-approved, asks first, or hands off to you. Password changes and moving money always stay with you.
- Powered by GPT-6 Astra.
- Who gets one: Pro users outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, and Business Premium users in all supported regions. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces get a beta that an admin must switch on. You must be 18 or older, and you create your dot on desktop.
- One dot per person for now. The first dot is included in the plan; OpenAI says more dots and more capacity will be sold later.
Read that list again and notice who every line is about. Your memory, your apps, your rules, your computer, your plan. A dot is a chief of staff. It is not a product you hand to anyone else.
What an AgentFront agent is
An AgentFront agent is an AI agent you build once and offer to other people:
- Its own storefront on
yourname.agentfront.meor your own domain, with a landing page, pricing and an FAQ. - Its own customers. Visitors sign up with an email, chat in the browser, and come back to their history. They do not need a ChatGPT account, an OpenAI plan, or anything else.
- Your knowledge, made explicit. Files, websites, sitemaps and live MCP servers, indexed into passages the agent cites.
- Your prompt, versioned. Every edit saves a new version you can roll back to.
- Your tools. Connectors for Shopify, Klaviyo and WordPress, any MCP server by URL, and connectors each customer links to their own account.
- Your prices. Free and paid monthly plans billed through your own Stripe account, with no platform cut.

Six differences that matter
1. A dot cannot be shared
There is no link to a dot, no store listing, and no way for a second person to talk to yours. That is by design: it holds your memory, your inbox access and your calendar. Handing it to a stranger would be handing them your accounts.
OpenAI's longer-term plans mention teams of dots and specialist dots that a company sets up with their own identity and access. Today, specialist dots are enterprise pilots run with OpenAI engineers, not something a creator can sign up for and publish.
An AgentFront agent is built to be shared. The link is the product. You can print it on a QR code, put it in a course, or sell it from your newsletter.
2. Your customers would each need their own expensive plan
Suppose you wanted a hundred clients to get help from "your" agent through ChatGPT. Each of them would need a Pro or Business Premium plan of their own, would have to live outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK on Pro, and would end up with their own dot that knows nothing about your material. You would have no say in what it does.
On AgentFront those hundred clients sign up on your storefront for free or for the plan you set. You decide what the agent knows, how it answers and what it costs them. Their AI usage is covered by your account's credits and capped per customer by the allowance on their plan.
3. A dot cannot earn you money
A dot is something you pay for. There is no way to charge someone else for access to it. If you want an agent that pays for itself, it needs plans, checkout and a customer list.
On AgentFront each paid plan becomes a product in your Stripe account. Customers pay you directly, AgentFront takes no cut, and only Stripe's own processing fees apply.
4. A dot learns, an AgentFront agent is taught
A dot builds memory from your ChatGPT history and the apps you connect, including on its own initiative. That is what makes it useful to you. It also means you cannot curate it precisely. OpenAI's help article notes that you cannot delete a dot's individual saved memories; the way to clear them is to reset the dot, which deletes it.
For an agent other people rely on, you want the opposite: a fixed set of sources you chose, answers that cite them, a way to test what a question retrieves, and a log of the questions it could not answer so you know what to add next.
5. A dot is a generalist, an AgentFront agent is a specialist
This is where a dot is honestly ahead. It has a full computer and browser, thousands of plugins, and it can write and test code through Codex. It can do almost anything you could do at a desk.
An AgentFront agent does one job for strangers, so its tools are deliberately narrower and safer to expose: search over your knowledge, image generation, a working document it fills in during the conversation, store and email connectors, and MCP servers you approve. There is no general web browsing. That trade is the right one for a public product. You do not want a visitor on your storefront steering a browser with your credentials in it.
6. Your brand, your address, your exit
A dot lives inside ChatGPT and carries ChatGPT's brand. If OpenAI changes the plan, the price, the markets or the feature, your workflow changes with it. That is fine for a personal assistant.
It is not fine for a product, as everyone who shared a chatgpt.com/g/… link is learning before December 11. An AgentFront agent sits on your domain. Your prompt, your files and your customer list are yours to take with you.
Which one do you need?
Choose a dot when:
- The work is yours: your inbox, your calendar, your research, your codebase.
- Nobody else will talk to the agent.
- You already pay for ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium.
Choose AgentFront when:
- Other people will use the agent: an audience, clients, students, members or buyers.
- You want to charge for it, or at least own the list of people using it.
- You need it to answer from a specific body of material and to cite it.
- It needs to work for people in any country, without a ChatGPT subscription.
- It should carry your brand and keep working whatever OpenAI decides next.
Using both
They fit together well, because one runs your business and the other is the product.
- Let your dot do the operator work. It can draft new knowledge documents from your notes, turn interview transcripts into FAQ entries, and remind you each Monday to look at last week's unanswered questions.
- Let your AgentFront agent face customers. It answers from the material your dot helped you write, on your storefront, under your plans.
- Keep the line clean. Do not connect your customer-facing tools to your dot, and do not give your storefront agent anything from your personal accounts. Each agent should only hold what its audience is allowed to see.
Turning what your dot knows into a product
If your dot has become very good at something other people would pay for, such as reviewing pitch decks, planning meals for a condition, or triaging support tickets for a product category, you can turn that expertise into an AgentFront agent. There is no export from a dot, so you rebuild it on purpose, which is also the moment to leave your personal context behind.
- Ask your dot to write it down. Ask for its method as a set of instructions for another assistant, without any personal details, account names or memories about you. Read the result and remove anything private.
- Collect the source material. Gather the documents, checklists and examples it relies on into one folder. These become knowledge sources.
- Create an agent at app.agentfront.me/signup. The Trial is free with no card. Describe the job in onboarding, add the folder as knowledge, and paste the instructions from step 1 as the system prompt.
- Pick plans. Start with a free plan and a small allowance, then add a paid one once people come back.
- Test as a customer in a private window with real questions, and compare the answers with what your dot gives you.
The Custom GPT migration guide walks through each step in detail, with screenshots, and the steps are the same.
Questions people ask
Will dots replace Custom GPTs? Not for sharing. OpenAI's stated path for Custom GPTs is migration into plugins, which stay inside a workspace, and dots are personal agents. Neither gives you a public link. If you have a GPT that other people use, see How to migrate a Custom GPT before December 11.
Can I put my dot on my website? No. There is no embed, no public link and no public API for dots. Its model, GPT-6 Astra, is available through OpenAI's API, which is how AgentFront's premium tier uses it.
Can my customers use the same model a dot uses? Yes. On the Grow plan and above an agent can run on GPT-6 Astra. Most agents do well on the default model, GPT-6 Luna, which is far cheaper per message; Launch adds GPT-6 Sol.
Does my team get access to my AgentFront agent like a shared dot? Yes. From the Launch plan you can invite teammates to an agent as admins or editors. Launch includes two seats, Grow five and Scale ten.
I am in the EU or the UK. Does any of this apply? Pro dots are not available in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK at launch. AgentFront storefronts work everywhere, with a cookie consent banner built in.
What does AgentFront cost? The Trial is free with 1,000 AI credits a month, one agent and 25 active customers. Explore is $9 a month, Launch $49 with three agents and custom domains, Grow $99 with ten agents and GPT-6 Astra. Your customers' payments go to your own Stripe account.
A dot is the best assistant you can hire for yourself. When the agent is meant for other people, give it an address of its own. Create your agent and see it live in a few minutes.
